MoPED Conference Hall, Tower Hill, Freetown, March 16th 2021— The Minister of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Dr. Francis Kai-Kai has today 16th  March, 2021 facilitated the donation of Office and IT equipment to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), courtesy of the ECOWAS Commission, to complement Government’s efforts in addressing drug abuse consumption , promote evidence based programmes on drug prevention education in Sierra Leone. 

The equipments, which includes: 6 Professional Desktop System , 6 Anti Virus, 6 APC Extension Cord, 6 UPS devices, 6 all in one scanner printers, 2 portable multimedia projectors, one 65” LG Smart TV, 6 Filling cabinets and assorted stationeries to further enhance the operational capacity of the national Drug Law Agency for data collection and overall  operations of the Agency. 

In her welcome statement, the Head of the ECOWAS National Office, Mamie-Miatta Kallon welcomed the team from NDLEA, said the items came as a result of       a monitoring mission led by the ECOWAS Drug Unit in 2018 to assess the level of implementation of the ECOWAS Drug Action Plan in Sierra Leone. 

She noted that the delivery of the equipment will help to facilitate data collection on drugs abuse in Sierra Leone. 

In his statement, Dr. Abdul Jalloh, Psychiatrist-in-Charge, Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital, Kissy, thanked the Minister and team for facilitating the process, recognized the great work of ECOWAS. 

He said as part of the implementation of the 2008-2014 ECOWAS Regional Action Plan, adopted in 2008 by Heads of States and Governments, seems to develop and maintain a suitable system of relevant, valid and reliable data on drug use, trafficking and organized crime. 

He recognized the Hon. Edward A. Soluku former Ministers of Internal Affairs and Prof. Alpha Wurie, former minister of Health and Sanitation for their role in making this process a

Presenting the equipments to the Agency, the Hon.  Minister, Dr. Francis Kai-Kai said the equipment were a necessary boost for institutional strengthening and capacity, while expressing gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission for the support, noted the efforts of his ministry in bringing up to speed some Departments, Agencies and State Owned Institutions in aligning their performances and service delivering processes  to the MTNDP. 

Dr. Kai-Kai encouraged the Agency to always utilize the equipment for the intended purpose in order to ensure transparent, accountability, effective and a visible delivery process. 

He called on the Agency to help protect the rights of Young people , noting a number of them involved in drug abuse, while admonishing them to work closely with Statistics Sierra Leone to assist them create a database for drug related abuses in the coming  mid term census. 

Receiving the items, the Executive Director of NDLEA, Abdul Sheku Kargbo, 
excitedly thanked the ECOWAS Commission, through the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development for the donation; noting that the equipment would enhance the work of the Agency in ensuring an effective evidence-based information for Policy Makers from ECOWAS Members States to address the Social, health and and Economic consequences.
